Imports 2D data from STEP files plus more.
STEP Import for AutoCAD is a STEP file import plug-in for AutoCADĀ®. This plug-in gives AutoCAD the ability to import geometric data from STEP files.
Quickly Imports 2D STEP files

STEP 2D Import for AutoCAD is a STEP file import plug-in for AutoCAD. This plug-in gives AutoCAD the ability to import geometric data from STEP files.
The STEP file format is widely used to exchange 3D data between different CAD systems. STEP files contain 3D geometry data of solid models. STEP 2D Import for AutoCAD reads the 3D geometry data from STEP files and creates 3D curve objects corresponding to each edge in the solid model. These 3D curves are added to the current AutoCAD drawing, thereby yielding the wireframe geometry of the solid in the STEP file.
STEP 2D Import for AutoCAD is very easy to use. Once installed, it must be loaded into the AutoCAD environment. There are simple instructions for this in the ReadMe file. Once loaded it adds new commands to AutoCAD’s existing commands and a new submenu called “STEP2DImport” to the AutoCAD menu containing these newly added commands.
Installation & Usage
Since STEP Import for AutoCAD is a plug-in for AutoCAD, it must be loaded into the AutoCAD environment before it can be used. Please follow the simple instructions in the STEP Import for AutoCAD ReadMe document which is copied into the installation folder.
After you have loaded the plug-in file into AutoCAD, simply click on the menu items in the “STEPImport” submenu or type “STEPImport” (without quotes) at the AutoCAD command prompt and press “Enter”. This will bring about the “File Open” dialog box from where you can select the STEP file you wish to import. Truly, software made simple!
About The STEP File Format
The Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (STEP) file format standard was developed to address the incompatibility issue with various CAD/CAM systems. This standard allows efficient and accurate exchange of product definition data across almost all CAD/CAM systems.
A STEP file is composed of 80-character ASCII records, a record length derived from the punch card era. Text strings are represented in “Hollerith” format, the number of characters in the string, followed by the letter “H”, followed by the text string, e.g., “4HSLOT”.
