Import polygon mesh data into AutoCAD
OBJ Import for AutoCAD is a Wavefront (.obj) file import plug-in for AutoCAD. Imports geometric data from ASCII and Binary OBJ files into AutoCAD.
Import Wavefront into AutoCAD

OBJ Import for AutoCAD reads polygon mesh data stored in OBJ files (Alias Wavefront format) and imports it right from within AutoCAD. A polygon mesh in an OBJ file is comprised of a set of triangular/quad faces.
OBJ Import for AutoCAD recreates the polygon meshes in an OBJ file inside the active AutoCAD drawing. The model can be recreated as set of points, lines, polylines, 3D faces or a polyface mesh.
OBJ Import for AutoCAD is very easy to use. Once installed, it must be loaded into the AutoCAD environment. There are simple instructions for this in the ReadMe file. Once loaded it adds new commands to AutoCAD’s existing commands and a new submenu called “OBJImport” to the AutoCAD menu containing these newly added commands.
The ‘OBJImport’ menu commands:
- Import - Imports an OBJ file
- Help - Displays the OBJ Import for AutoCAD help file
- Register - Registers your copy of OBJ Import for AutoCAD
- About - Displays the OBJ Import for AutoCAD About box
- OBJ Import for AutoCAD comes with detailed documentation for each command as well as a tutorial to get you started in the shortest possible time.
The OBJ File Format
The OBJ file format is a geometry definition file format first developed by Wavefront Technologies for its Advanced Visualizer animation package. The file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors, making it a universally accepted geometry file format.
The OBJ file format is a simple data format that represents 3D geometry alone - namely, the position of each vertex, the texture coordinate associated with a vertex, the normal at each vertex, and the faces that make each polygon.
Installation & Usage
Since OBJ Import for AutoCAD is a plug-in for AutoCAD, it must be loaded into the AutoCAD environment before it can be used. Please follow the simple instructions in the OBJ Import for AutoCAD ReadMe document which is copied into the installation folder.
After you have loaded the plug-in file into AutoCAD, simply click on the menu items in the “OBJImport” submenu or type “OBJImport” (without quotes) at the AutoCAD command prompt and press “Enter”. This will bring about the “File Open” dialog box from where you can select the OBJ file you wish to import.
